A history of hate

A timeline of the feud between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia:

Aug. 15, 1999: During the final round of the PGA Championship at Medinah, Garcia, then 19, tweaked Woods, who was playing in the group behind him, when he glared back at Woods after sinking a birdie putt on the par-3 13th. Woods went on to win the tournament, beating Garcia by one stroke.

Aug. 28, 2000: At the made-for-TV Battle of Bighorn, Garcia beat Woods by a stroke and celebrated as if he had just won his first major. Woodswas slowed that night with the flu and took exception to Garcia’s celebration.

June 14, 2002: At the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, after a soggy second round, during which Garcia shot 74 to Tiger’s 68, Garcia complained the round should have been halted because of rain and that “if Tiger Woods would have been out there, it would have been called.” Woods and Garcia ended up together in the final pairing, though Woods had a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday. Woods shot 72 to win the tournament at 3-under, while Garcia posted another 74 and finished in fourth at 3-over.

July 23, 2006: Garcia entered the final round of the British Open at Royal Liverpool one shot behind Woods. Garcia was dressed head-to-toe in canary yellow that day (right). Woods shot 67 en route to winning while Garcia shot 73 and faded from contention. Afterward, Woods reportedly sent a text to a friend reading: “I just bludgeoned Tweety Bird.”

September, 2006: Before the Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland, Garcia said, “Fortunately for us, [Woods] doesn’t have a great Ryder Cup record, so I’m looking forward to hopefully going out there and meeting him two or three times.” Garcia and Woods played against each other once, with Garcia and Luke Donald beating Woods and Jim Furyk 2-up en route to Europe winning the Ryder Cup in a rout.

May 11: Paired together in the third round of The Players Championship, Garcia accused Woods of intentionally distracting him by drawing a 5-wood from his bag — eliciting a roar from the crowd — while Garcia was taking a shot. That led to a series of trash talk that culminated with Garcia’s racially insensitive remarks about Woods.
