SALON BIZ EDITOR OUT IN NEW SHAKEUP

Salon Editor-in-Chief David Talbot is shaking up the staff of the embattled Webzine once again.

Business editor Andrew Essex – who was lured to the Webzine only last April from US Weekly – is out. No replacement is expected to be named.

“It was a mutual decision,” Essex told The Post. Talbot told The Post, “Salon is redirecting its business section toward more coverage of the technology industries and personal finance, with less emphasis on the entertainment business, which was Andrew’s particular strength. We wish Andrew the best of luck. He’s a talented and indefatigable editor and has a great future ahead.”

It’s the second change of editorial direction at the embattled ‘zine in recent weeks. The company in early June axed 13 staffers – about 9 percent of its work force – and said it was slashing operating expenses by 20 percent.

At that time, it said that media coverage would continue as part of general business coverage.

Now, Essex said, he had been told the business section will disappear entirely and be folded into technology section. Last week, Salon reported smaller losses than expected and said cost containment and increasing revenue would help it reach profitability next year.
