Mets’ Davis demoted to Triple-A after Marlins sweep

The Mets demoted slumping first baseman Ike Davis to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday after an 8-4, 10-inning loss to the Marlins sealed a weekend sweep.

Davis’ status with the team has been an issue for weeks. The first baseman is batting just .161 with five homers, 66 strikeouts and an atrocious .500 OPS in 55 games. Davis went 0-for-3 on Sunday, took at least two horrible swings and was pinch-hit for in a second consecutive game.

“I think that at some point, you just have to say to yourself this is not in his best interest,” general manager Sandy Alderson said.

“Hopefully he’ll be back in a short period of time.”

Alderson added, “I think first and foremost, Ike needs to get his confidence back.”

Davis declined to talk with reporters after the demotion news was announced.

The Mets had told Davis and struggling shortstop Ruben Tejada after the second game of the Subway Series on May 28 they could face imminent demotions, with one source saying at the time it was “likely”

both would have been optioned to Triple-A if the Mets had lost that night. The Mets won that night, and Davis went 6-for-28 with seven strikeouts and one homer in the next eight games.

Lefty reliever Robert Carson and backup outfielder Mike Baxter also were optioned to Triple-A. No corresponding moves will be announced until Monday, but Alderson said a player would be recalled who is capable of playing first base.
