NY Hasidim protest Israel draft policy

A sea of Hasids flooded into lower Manhattan yesterday to rage against Israel’s plan to draft ultra-Orthodox men into the army.

The massive protest drew thousands of Hasidim to Foley Square, where they heard leaders rally them in Yiddish to fight against the legislative proposal.

Many in the all-male crowd, which included everyone from white-bearded elders to teens and little boys, were brought in on yellow school buses from Brooklyn, upstate, New Jersey and beyond.

The sides of their buses were plastered with posters protesting the draft, which would require military service even from ultra-Orthodox students. All other young men and women are already mandated to serve.

The protesters snarled traffic for hours around City Hall.
