Vera Farmiga, Andy Garcia bring the spark to drab ‘At Middleton’

Two parents accompanying their kids on a college tour get in touch with their own inner teens in this wan comedy. Free-spirited Edith (Vera Farmiga) is at odds with her type-A daughter, Audrey (Taissa Farmiga, Vera’s real-life sister), while George (Andy Garcia) is a heart surgeon whose son, Conrad (Spencer Lofranco), chafes at his dad’s overplanning.

George and Edith lag behind the campus tour — led by an amusing Nicholas Braun — and finally bail altogether, taking their own detour that includes sitting in on a drama exercise and, predictably, getting high with students.

Audrey, meanwhile, meets her dream professor (Tom Skerritt) only to have her meticulous college vision upended, while Conrad bonds with a weirdly middle-aged campus radio DJ (Peter Riegert).

None of this is particularly innovative, although Garcia and the elder Farmiga develop a nice spark and a gentle humor in their characters’ stolen day together.
