Wasted TriBeCa stars flee

Celebrities and other wealthy homeowners in TriBeCa know exactly how garbage-wary Upper East Siders feel.

The downtown residents had tried to stop a 10-story sanitation garage from being built on Spring Street near the West Side Highway — and are fleeing the neighborhood now that their efforts have failed to stop the trash-packed eyesore from going up.

“A lot of people sold and got out after it was approved. The others now are having a harder time selling, especially those whose apartments would face it,” said Carole De Saram with the Tribeca Community Association, which was among several groups that went to court in a futile effort to stop the facility.

Opponents of the trash garage, which has been dubbed the “Tower O’ Garbage,” include high-profile SoHo and TriBeCa residents such as “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, REM frontman Michael Stipe, “Mad Men” star John Slattery and actresses Jennifer Connelly and Kirsten Dunst.

The residents unsuccessfully argued that the $400 million, 120-foot-tall garage should have been broken down into smaller pieces around the city.

They also suggested that building a park on top of a lower building would cause the place to have less of a negative effect on the way the pricey neighborhood looks.

The 400,000-square-foot garbage garage is slated to be completed sometime by next summer, sources said.
