MLB: Scherzer improves to 13-0

Max Scherzer worked into the seventh inning to become the first pitcher in 27 years to get off to a 13-0 start, leading the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

He is the first pitcher to begin the season with 13 wins and no losses since Roger Clemens was 14-0 for the Red Sox in 1986.

In Chicago, Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 32nd homer and added a tiebreaking two-run double to lead the Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the White Sox.

In Boston, pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes homered leading off the ninth inning to lift the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Padres.

Boston is 7-1 on its nine-game homestand that concludes today.

In Pittsburgh, Jeff Locke ran his winning streak to eight games, Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer and the Pirates beat the Phillies 6-5.

NBA: Rose stands by decision

Bulls star Derrick Rose said he’s still recovering from knee surgery and vows to show sitting out last season was the right decision.

In an interview posted on the team’s website, Rose said he had to be selfish in his rehab as he tried to work his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee even though sitting out was “one of the hardest things I’ve had to g

o through in my life.”

NFL: Warrant for 49ers LB on hold

The Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office said it erroneously filed an arrest warrant for 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks after allegations he hit teammate Lamar Devens on the head three times with a beer bottle.

Assistant District Attorney Karyn Sinunu-Towery said yesterday the office is still investigating and will decide next week whether or not to bring charges.

NHL: Kings Stoll suffers seizure

Kings center Jarret Stoll was hospitalized after suffering a seizure. The Los Angeles Times reported Stoll fell ill at his home.

The 31-year-old Stoll missed all but the first game of the Kings’ second-round playoff series against the Sharks after suffering a concussion.

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was named to the league’s All-Star team for the sixth time and he made it at two positions. The MVP made the first team at right wing for the first time, but also was named to the second team as a left wing despite playing just four games there all season.

GOLF: Simpson hoping for a change

Webb Simpson hopes to have another late lead at the Greenbrier Classic — and this time hang onto it as the tournament gets underway today in West Virginia.

Two years ago, Simpson made the turn in the final round of the Greenbrier Classic with a one-stroke lead before finishing two strokes out of a playoff. Last year, Simpson lost a one-shot lead on the back nine again with three straight bogeys. Phil Mickelson also is in the tournament.

Two-time U.S. Open Champion Andy North has accepted an invitation to be a vice captain for U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson next year.

ETC.: Cavendish takes Tour stage

Mark Cavendish finally shook off an illness and a drop in form to earn his 24th career stage win at the Tour de France and close within 35 points of rival Peter Sagan for the top sprinter’s green jersey.

In Istanbul, substitute Yiadom Boakye set up the equalizer and then scored a late winner as Ghana beat Portugal 3-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Under-20 World Cup. Ghana next plays Chile, which beat Croatia 2-0.

Also in Istanbul, South Korea beat Colombia in a penalty shootout. South Korea will now play Iraq, which needed extra time to beat Paraguay 1-0.
