OBIT: Jack Pardee, 76

Jack Pardee, one of Bear Bryant’s “Junction Boys” at Texas A&M who went on to become an All-Pro linebacker and an NFL coach, died yesterday in Houston. He was 76.

Pardee played for the Rams and Redskins in the NFL. He coached in the World Football League for one season before moving on to the NFL, where he coached the Bears, Redskins and Houston Oilers.

HOOPS: Columbia hires Glance

Stephanie Glance was hired as the new women’s basketball coach at Columbia. She spent the past three seasons at Illinois State. She replaces Paul Nixon, who didn’t have his contract renewed. The Lions were 5-23 this season and went 3-11 in the Ivy League.

Jabarie Hinds, a 5-foot-11 guard from Mount Vernon who averaged 7.4 points per game this past season, is transferring from West Virginia to a school to be determined. … North Carolina State’s C.J. Leslie, a 6-9 forward, said he is skipping his final season and entering the NBA Draft. … Kentucky freshman Archie Goodwin said he is leaving early for the NBA while Willie Cauley-Stein and Kyle Wiltjer will be back.

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said Western Kentucky will officially join the league on July 1, 2014. A source said Tulsa will then leave C-USA to join the Big East football schools in their soon to be renamed league.

Tubby Smith, fired last week at Minnesota, reportedly has agreed to become the next coach at Texas Tech.
