Bruins, Leafs need 7

TORONTO — The Maple Leafs are close to making playoff history.

Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel scored third-period goals and the Maple Leafs edged the Bruins 2-1 last night to send their playoff series back to Boston for a Game 7 tonight.

The winner will play the winner of tonight’s Rangers-Capitals Game 7.

The Maple Leafs, making their return to the postseason for the first time since 2004, became the 48th team in Stanley Cup history to rally from a 3-1 deficit to force Game 7.

As if the Bruins did not have enough problems, their plane broke down.

“As a result we are staying in Toronto on Sunday night and the team will travel to Boston on Monday morning,” Boston GM Peter Chiarelli said in a statement.

Red Wings 3, Ducks 2

In Anaheim, Calif., Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula each had a goal and an assist, and the Red Wings finished off the Ducks in Game 7.

Justin Abdelkader scored a short-handed goal and Jimmy Howard made 31 saves as the seventh-seeded Red Wings ousted the Ducks, who had the NHL’s third-best record.
