Cubs re-up Rizzo for 7

Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs agreed to a seven-year, $41 million contract.

According to reports, the deal includes two team options that could make it worth as much as $73 million over nine years.

The 23-year-old Rizzo is considered one of the centerpieces of the Cubs’ rebuilding efforts.

He is hitting .288 with a .352 on-base percentage and has nine home runs and 28 RBIs in his third major league season.

The Cardinals put right-hander Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation.

The Rockies placed outfielder Michael Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list with a neck injury.

SOCCER: Ferguson finale

Alex Ferguson was given a fitting send-off in his final home game in charge of Manchester United as his club of nearly 27 years scored a trademark late winner against Swansea, capping an emotional day of celebrations at Old Trafford.

ETC.: Young arrested again

Authorities say former Lions wide receiver Titus Young was arrested in California for the third time in a week. He has been charged with attempted burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

Bobby Butler, Paul Stastny and Stephen Gionta scored as the United States beat Germany 3-0 to clinch a quarterfinal berth at the hockey world championships in Finland. Canada, Russia and Switzerland are also moving on.

Fernando Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Alonso’s Ferrari was fifth on the grid but used an aggressive start to take control and beat Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus by nearly 10 seconds, with teammate Felipe Massa 26 seconds behind. Sebastian Vettel was a distant 38.2 seconds back in fourth, meaning Alonso cut the gap to 17 points in the overall standings after five races.

Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Madrid Open to retain her No. 1 ranking and collect her 50th career title. Rafael Nadal eased by Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 for his fifth title since returning from a knee injury.
