A freelance journalist from New York was killed in a shootout in Oaxaca, Mexico yesterday as pro-government gunmen there clashed with protesters in barricaded streets, authorities said.
The cameraman, Bradley Will, 36, of the East Village, was shot once in the chest when gunfire erupted in a rough neighborhood, Mexican authorities said.
Will, who was working for Indymedia.org, died at a Red Cross hospital.
“He was a stand-up guy,” said John Penley, 53, a cameraman friend of Will’s from the Lower East Side.
“He was a nonexcitable kind of guy, even in the midst of turmoil he always had a smile on his face.”
Protesters have taken over Oaxaca since June. They accuse the governor of rigging the 2004 election and using violence against his opponents.
