FAMILY BASHES CHARLES SCHULZ SHOW

THE son of “Peanuts” cartoon ist Charles Schulz says he’s dissatisfied with the way his late father is portrayed in an upcoming “American Masters” on PBS.

Monte Schulz, 55, commented on the TV show yesterday, after he reacted negatively in The New York Times to an upcoming book about his father called “Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography,” written by David Michaelis and due in bookstores later this week.

Schulz, one of Charles Schulz’s five children, said yesterday he’s seen the upcoming documentary – titled “Good Ol’ Charles Schulz” and scheduled to premiere Oct. 29.

“I liked a lot of it . . . but I called [director] David Van Taylor up and I said it just seemed kind of dreary, to be honest,” Schulz said in a phone interview.

Schulz feels that both the book and the TV show depict his father, who died in 2000 at age 77, as dour and depressed. “I thought it was dreary and depressing,” he said of the documentary. “I was not happy with it at all. Our response to the book, and it’s the same for the documentary, is like they’re kind of missing the point. They didn’t really show enough of how fun Dad was.”

Unfortunately, representatives of Ch. 13, producer of the “American Masters” series, were unavailable for comment yesterday due to the Columbus Day holiday. As a result, producers of the documentary were not available either.
