NHL: Isles capture opener

Mike Comrie scored twice and had two assists in his Islanders debut, leading them to a 6-4 victory over the Sabres in the season opener last night in Buffalo.

Ruslan Fedotenko had a goal and two assists, including the 100th of his career, and Bill Guerin added three assists; Comrie’s four-point game matched a career high. Chris Campoli and Josef Vasicek also scored in helping the Islanders open with a victory for the first time since 2001, and second time in the past 12 seasons.

Also, defenseman Radek Martinek signed a three-year contract extension through at least 2011.

NBA: Bobcats’ May out for season

Charlotte Bobcats forward Sean May will miss the season after deciding to undergo microfracture surgery on his troublesome right knee. May, who saw two knee specialists this week, will have the surgery Tuesday in New York. Recovery time will take 6-12 months.

MLB: Bradley fined, not suspended

Padres outfielder Milton Bradley was fined but not suspended for his confrontation last month with umpire Mike Winters. Winters previously was suspended for inciting Bradley.

* Orioles vice president of baseball operations Jim Duquette resigned after two seasons. . . . Pirates manager Jim Tracy was fired after two years filled with long losing streaks and little discernible progress by a team that has had 15 consecutive losing seasons.

GOLF: Roberts grabs lead

In Timonium, Md., Loren Roberts shot a bogey-free 66 that gave him a two-shot lead over Scott Hoch at the midpoint of the Senior Players Championship.

* In San Antonio, Jesper Parnevik followed his career-best opening 61 with a 5-under 65 to take a four-stroke lead midway through the Texas Open.

NFL: Price out with neck injury

Bills receiver Peerless Price‘s season is likely over after he was scheduled to have surgery to repair a disc in his neck. Coach Dick Jauron said the team will place Price on injured reserve.

* Steelers WR Hines Ward will miss his second game in a row because of a right knee injury. . . . Carolina QB Jake Delhomme did not practice again and is listed as doubtful for tomorrow’s game against the Saints.
