YOU CUBED

THE Eiffel Tower looms large in the background, and the Seine is at your fingertips. In fact, you can almost smell Paris, as long as Jeanie Ahn orders French takeout for lunch. All this, mere steps from Central Park – it’s Ahn’s peachy Parisian office cubicle in the Time Warner Center. Like many workaholic New Yorkers, she spends a lot of time in her little home away from home. So she decided to make it a little more homey.

“My cubicle is decorated to look like Paris, with a large image of the Eiffel Tower, a wine rack and even a crystal chandelier,” says the 26-year-old consumer researcher. “I spend a ton of time in it and wanted it to look like my favorite city.”

Ahn’s favorite city comes thanks to professional designers at Cubefabulous.com, a Web-based reality show that does for office space what “Extreme Makeover” does for homes.

The site, which is sponsored by Monster.com, is free, though participants must agree to be filmed for an online episode. And live with the results.

“When I asked cubefabulous to come decorate, I told them that I loved Paris, but they went too over-the-top,” Ahn says. “With all the stuff everywhere, people kept stopping by and I couldn’t get any work done – plus I hardly had space for my work.” After about two weeks, she took some of the stuff down, though she kept the chandelier.

Another participant, Blake de la Torre, kept all their décor intact – meaning her work life is a constant tailgate party.

“I told them I wanted a theme based on Penn State, where I went to college, and they came in with absolutely everything imaginable,” says Blake de la Torre, a 23-year-old promotions coordinator for Horizon Media Incorporated. “I have a Astroturf carpet and an actual grill to really add to the whole tailgating idea.”

For those who would rather do it themselves, the Web is full of sites like cubeXpressions.com and cyberguys.com that sell desk toys, posters – anything to pimp your cube.

Or there’s your collection. Hello Kitty fanatic Meghan Flannery turned to her own toys to deck out her office space at design firm Ariela-Alpha International.

“My cubicle is a little girl’s paradise, with a dominant hello kitty theme decorated with cupcakes, candy and a little touch of Barbie,” Flannery says. “I spend a lot of time at work and if you work a lot, your cubicle is like your home and you should decorate it like it is home.”

Gary Mauro, a 35-year-old Promotions Designer for Time, Inc. also thinks outside the box.

“My cubicle is a pop art explosion, with over 100 old toys, action figures and tons of pictures,” Mauro says. “I’ve collected the things over many, many years and now it’s become what it is. Whatever crosses my path that I find interesting, I add.

“If you could look inside my head,” Mauro adds. “This is what you’d see. It’s a reflection of my personality.”
