NHL: Bergeron suffers concussion

In Boston, Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was taken from the ice on a stretcher yesterday against Philadelphia- 2-1 winners over Boston -after losing consciousness when he was hit from behind by Flyers defenseman Randy Jones.

ESPN reported Bergeron has a broken nose and concussion, but he has regained consciousness and is moving all limbs. Bergeron was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital after the hit, where Bruins team physician Dr. Bertram Zarins was treating him.

GOLF: Baird makes charge

Making a huge move up the leaderboard, Briny Baird’s eight-birdie, one-bogey effort through 15 holes got him to 14 under and within two shots of leaders Bob Estes and Daniel Chopra during the suspended third round at the Ginn sur mer Classic in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

* In Pattaya, Thailand, Norwegian star Suzann Pettersen left everyone else behind in the Honda LPGA Thailand, birdieing five of the last seven holes for a bogey-free 9-under 63 and a seven-stroke lead.

* In Sonoma, Calif., Denis Watson shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Jim Thorpe and Brad Bryant into the final round of the Champion Tour’s seasonending Charles Schwab Championship.

NFL: Patriots activate Seymour

In Foxborough, Mass., the Patriots activated five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour in time for today’s game against the Redskins. Seymour spent the first seven games of the season on the physically unable to perform list because of a knee injury.

MLB: Biggio wins Clemente award

Craig Biggio capped his sweat-stained career with one more cherished honor.

The longtime Astros star won the 2007 Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to a major league player who combines community service with excellence on the field.

TENNIS: Federer reaches finals

In Basel, Switzerland, top-ranked Roger Federer defeated big-serving Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) to move into the final of his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament.

The defending champion will play Jarkko Nieminen, who advanced to his first final of the year by beating Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (4), 6-2.

BOXING: Povetkin defeats Byrd

In Erfurt, Germany, unbeaten Russian Alexander Povetkin (14-0, 11 knockouts) pounded Chris Byrd (40-4-1) until the American’s father threw in the towel in the 11th round. The 2004 Olympic champion took a step toward fighting world champion Wladimir Klitschko, winning the bloody IBF elimination fight.
