Vice President Dick Cheney went hunting this morning in upstate New York, where some avid sportsmen gave him a piece valuable advice — don’t invite them.
Knowing full well that the safest place to stand when Cheney has a shotgun is behind him, these hunters were taking no chances.
They did their hunting at a different gun club.
Not that they had a choice. The Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in Dutchess County where Cheney did his shooting is reserved for the well-heeled enthusiasts – no matter how bad their guest’s aim might be.
Deer hunter Bill Tryon, 48, who was shooting at the Mid-County Rod & Gun club on the other side of Clove Mountain, said he had no problem with Cheney pulling the trigger near his preserve.
“As long as he doesn’t shoot anyone in the ass,” Tryon said.
Cheney became a punch line in 2006 after he sprayed a hunting companion, lawyer Harry Whittington, during a Texas hunting trip.
The Vice President came under fire for not going public with the incident for four days.
Cheney called the mishap “one of the worst days” of his life.
Whittington forgave Cheney for the accident, and chided the media for being so hard on the vice president.
Residents in New York’s Hudson River Valley were more concerned about the traffic. Cheney’s 15 SUV caravan forced officials to close a section of Route 9 in both directions.
