LITTLE IS BRAN NEW IN CORNY CEREAL COMEDY

FLAKES *1/2

INDIE filmmaker Michael Lehmann im pressed a lot of people with his feature debut “Heathers” in 1989. But he’s not going to win many fans with his latest effort, “Flakes.”

The comedy takes its name from an eatery in pre-Katrina New Orleans. The restaurant sells breakfast cereal to savvy stoners. But the cornflakes hit the fan when a yuppie with a lawyer daddy opens a knockoff restaurant across the street and starts stealing Flakes’ customers.

The rivalry gets more complicated when the new joint hires Pussy Katz (Zooey Deschanel), the oddly named young woman who lives with the would-be musician (Aaron Stanford) who manages Flakes for its eccentric owner (Christopher Lloyd).

There are a few sweet moments as the story reaches its unsurprising conclusion. But, all in all, “Flakes” isn’t going to bowl you over.

Running time: 84 minutes. Not rated (nothing objectionable). At the IFC Center, Sixth Avenue and Third Street.
