MIKE’S STATIC ON CELLPHONES

A pilot project that would allow students to bring cellphones to about a dozen public schools has raised questions about the cost and liability, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

“The problem is who’s liable if somebody were to steal the phone and if you have to have a guard there,” Bloomberg said on his WABC radio show.

“The bottom line is we don’t have extra money in our budget to pay for the protection of cellphones. If we’re going to have extra money we’re going to use it to give raises to people in the schools.”

The phones would be stored during class hours. The project has been postponed for about eight months.
