DR. PHIL CANCELS SPEARS SHOW

Dr. Phil is getting out of the Britney Spears business — at least for now.

TV shrink Phil McGraw — stinging from accusations of talk-show ambulance chasing after the pop singer’s mental meltdown — pulled the plug today on a show he planned with her mom and dad, Jamie and Lynn Spears.

“Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help,” McGraw said in a statement to “Entertainment Tonight,” which is produced and distributed by the same company as “Dr. Phil.”

“Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time. Britney and her family are in our prayers and we ask that they be in yours.”

The parents were reportedly having second thoughts about doing “Dr. Phil” after conflicting accounts about McGraw’s Saturday meeting with Spears at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Britney has since reportedly left the hospital and is hiding out with loved ones.

Dr. Phil had been accused of ambushing Britney with a visit at the hospital, an allegation he strongly denied. He said he had been invited to talk to her by her family.

Her parents were slated to both tape a show with Dr. Phil, but Jamie Spears had reportedly pulled out even before McGraw issued his statement saying the show was canceled.

Dr. Phil declined to reveal details of his hospital meeting with Britney, citing patient confidentiality.

“As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital,” McGraw said.

“The details of that visit will, of course, remain private.”

Dr. Phil has been publicly defending the Spears parents since Britney’s meltdown last week and 16-year-old Jamie Lynn’s unexpected. out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
