CLOONEY’S UN DARFUR PEACE BID

The United Nations yesterday unveiled its master plan for stopping the bloodshed in Darfur – George Clooney.

The 46-year-old “Syriana” star has been tapped to serve as the UN’s new “messenger of peace.”

“You have seen firsthand the pain experienced by the victims of war and made it your personal mission to help end violence and human suffering,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told People magazine’s two-time choice for “Sexiest Man Alive.”

Clooney and fellow actor Don Cheadle have used their celebrity clout to support the refugee charity event “Not on Our Watch,” and both were honored by Nobel peace laureates last year in Rome for their efforts to stop the violence.

“I look forward to working with the United Nations in order to build public support for its critically important work in some of the most difficult, dangerous and dire places in the world,” Clooney said in a statement yesterday.

Some 200,000 people have lost their lives and 2 million more have been forced from their Sudanese homes.
