Bills vs. Giants

Super Bowl XXV

Tampa Stadium

Jan. 27, 1991

Lawrence Tynes can be thankful the stifling Giants defense gave him three chances to kick the winning field goal in the NFC Championship game against the Packers, otherwise he might have joined Scott Norwood in kickers’ hell.

Norwood’s 47-yard boot that was wide right with four seconds left in Super Bowl XXV preserved the Giants’ 20-19 lead and earned Big Blue their second Lombardi Trophy in five seasons.

The Giants, seven-point underdogs, were not expected to control the explosive Bills offense. But thanks to running back/Super Bowl MVP Ottis Anderson and backup quarterback Jeff Hostetler, filling in for injured Phil Simms, the Giants controlled the ball for 40 minutes.
