METRO PLANS PAPER CUTS

Metro International, the London-based freebie newspaper company, said it is firing 27 people at its newspapers in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, after losing more than $10 million during the past year.

The company said it hoped to save $4.6 million a year.

Most of the layoffs seemed to be concentrated in New York, where 11 people, including US Editor-in-Chief Jon Auerbach and Publisher Daniel Magnus, got the ax last week.

“These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to move all of Metro International’s US operations to profitability,” said Robert Patterson, Metro’s executive vice president.

Patterson had axed nine people in Boston, including Publisher Stuart Layne. On Friday, Patterson was said to have chopped at least five jobs in Philadelphia.
