NBA: Kurt Thomas traded

The Spurs acquired former Knicks forward Kurt Thomas from the Sonics last night in exchange for guard Brent Barry, center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick. The 6-foot-9 Thomas, 35, is in his 13th NBA season.

* Maurice Cheeks and the 76ers agreed to a one-year contract extension yesterday, giving the former NBA star through the 2008-09 season to reach the postseason for the first time as Philadelphia’s coach.

COLLEGE: Miami decks Duke

Miami (18-7, 5-6 ACC) beat No. 5 Duke (22-3, 10-2) for the first time in 45 years, holding on to win 96-95 last night in Coral Gables . . . Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 29 points to lead No. 1 Memphis (26-0) over Tulane, 97-71, giving coach John Calipari his 400th victory . . . Ramar Smith scored 19 points as No. 2 Tennessee (24-2) beat Auburn, 89-70 . . . Trevon Hughes scored 18 points to help No. 11 Wisconsin (22-4, 12-2) beat host Illinois (11-16) and move into a first-place tie with Purdue in the Big Ten.

* Despite Bryant Dunston‘s 30 points, Fordham (10-13, 4-7) dropped a 69-65 overtime decision at St. Louis (15-11, 6-6).

BASEBALL: Crisp may want trade

Coco Crisp, who lost his center-field job to Boston rookie Jacoby Ellsbury in the postseason, said yesterday he’d probably talk to the Red Sox about trading him if it appears he won’t get his starting job back.

* Pitcher Shawn Chacon and the Astros agreed Wednesday to a $2 million, one-year contract. The 30-year-old righty has a career record of 43-58 and a 4.98 ERA with 36 saves with Colorado (2001-05), the Yankees (2005-06) and the Pirates (2006-07) . . . Free-agent pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim and the Pirates agreed to terms on a major league contract.

* Scott Vander Weg, a 25-year-old minor league pitcher in the Cardinals organization, was suspended yesterday for the first 50 games of the season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
