ARMY CRANE FAILS IN SI

An 80-foot crane operated by the Army Corps of Engineers collapsed yesterday on the Staten Island shoreline, just an hour before the city’s buildings commissioner declared that the city wouldn’t tolerate unsafe practices in the industry.

“We will accept no shortcuts – none,” said Robert LiMandri after he was sworn in at City Hall by Mayor Bloomberg.

One person was injured in the accident in West Brighton and taken to the hospital. The crane was being operated from a barge along the shore, where metal barriers were being installed along a vacant strip of land.

On Monday, the Buildings Department announced stricter regulations governing certain types of crane operations.
