MAYORAL CONTROL A WINNER IN POLL

A majority of city voters believe that the next mayor should continue to run the public schools, a poll has found.

Big Apple voters favor mayoral control by 52 percent to 37 percent, according to a Quinnipiac survey released yesterday.

By 62 percent to 29 percent, voters support the expansion of charters, which are privately run, publicly funded schools. And 67 percent of parents support more charters.

Overall, 47 percent of voters approve of the way Mayor Bloomberg has run the schools, compared to 40 percent who give him a thumbs-down.

But when voters were asked if the mayor should share power over the schools with the City Council, the results shift: 53 percent support joint authority, and 37 percent don’t.
