BIOPSY FOR MURCER

Bobby Murcer received some bad news regarding his fight against brain cancer.

According to an e-mail from his wife, Kay, to friends and family, Murcer’s doctors saw something troublesome on his MRI on Tuesday and the former Yankee and current YES announcer will have to undergo a brain biopsy on Monday.

“Bobby’s MRI Tuesday showed an area that the docs are concerned about, and he is scheduled for a brain biopsy at MDA this coming Monday,” Kay said in the e-mail. “Please pray that it will be determined to be necrosis (scar tissue from the radiation), and not another cancerous tumor. It’s one of the two.”

Murcer was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on Christmas Eve 2006, but was able to return to the Yankees’ booth on opening day to call one inning. He returned on a part-time basis later in the season.

According to reports, Murcer said yesterday that the biopsy will force him to miss the first two spring training games, but he hopes to return to the booth for the third game on March 7 and if all goes well will continue with his regular schedule.
