MAKING SUMMER ROCK

PARENTS who name their daughter Palace have to expect that she’ll be a bit of an oddball. Just how much of an oddball 7-year-old Palace has turned out to be comes forth in “Girls Rock!” a fun documentary about a summer camp where girls up to age 18 learn to be rockers and build self-esteem while they’re at it.

Palace is a tiny bundle of energy who’s into heavy metal. But her strong point is howling like a banshee, an activity that assaults eardrums but gives her great joy.

She is one of four girls at the center of the film, an appealing mix of live action and animation directed by Shane King and Arne Johnson.

The camp runs for a week in a warehouse in Oregon. What the girls might lack in musical talent and experience they make up for with infectious energy.
