CURTIS COACH RETIRES

Fred Olivieri won his fourth PSAL football title this season and last week decided to go out on top. The Curtis head coach, who has been at the Staten Island school for 26 years, will retire in June.

“It was a very tough decision,” said Olivieri, who finished with 170 career victories and will be replaced by Pete Gambardella, a former Curtis player and an assistant coach for the past decade. “My whole life has been on the football field, it seems.”

The Warriors completed a 13-0 season in 2007 with a victory over Canarsie in the title game.

Christ the King had won 23 straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan championships until the Lady Royals lost to Molloy last night, 45-41, at St. John’s Prep. Molloy ended CTK’s 108-game league winning streak earlier in the season.

Molloy, which was paced by Kerri White’s 12 points, will compete in the AA playoffs, and CTK, which was led by Bria Smith’s 21 points, will be in the A.
