BID TO BUY STARRETT CITY

A coalition of labor, faith-based and other community groups wants to buy Brooklyn’s Starrett City, according to a published report.

The coalition is spearheaded by the Central Labor Council, the Christian Cultural Center and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, Crain’s New York Business reports.

It wants to take over the 140-acre, 46-building complex off Jamaica Bay and keep it affordable for renters.

The Rev. A.R. Bernard, founder of the Christian Cultural Center, which has 2,300 members living in Starrett City, said:

“We’ve put together a plan that keeps the community’s best interest at heart and yet, at the same time, makes it attractive enough for investors to get involved.”
