SOURCES: SPITZER ‘LIKELY TO’ RESIGN TOMORROW

Governor Spitzer is “likely to resign” tomorrow, a top aide to the governor said.

The word came as Spitzer’s administration teetered on the brink of ruin over allegations he had a tryst with a prostitute.

Spitzer spent yesterday huddled with key advisers and lawyers in his Fifth Avenue apartment – hoping to arrange a plea deal under which he’d resign his office but avoid prison time. It’s not clear whether or not a deal was struck.

Senate Republicans threatened to start impeachment proceedings within the next 24 hours if he didn’t step down.

Earlier in the day some of the Governor’s aides floated the suggestion that Spitzer might even try to finish the remaining three years of his term.

In Albany, Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who would take over when Spitzer quit, told reporters that he hadn’t heard from the governor since Monday.

The twists and turns came as the scandal deeepened with the bombshell revelation that Spitzer spent up to $80,000 on sex with prostitutes, according to sources.
