Mom throws twins from burning home to save them

A desperate mom was forced to throw her twin toddlers out the window of a Yonkers home after a suspicious fire broke out early Wednesday, authorities said.

The flames quickly engulfed the three-story building on Van Cortlandt Avenue at around 2 a.m., causing the panicked mother to toss her 3-year-old daughters from the second floor window, according to the Yonkers Fire Department.

The tots were caught by a relative on the sidewalk below as smoke billowed from the window.

A 13-year-old girl was seriously injured when she attempted to jump from the window and landed awkwardly, possibly hitting her head and breaking one or both legs, authorities said.

A pregnant woman in a basement apartment also managed to escape the blaze unharmed.

The survivors were taken to Jacobi Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Assistant fire chief Edward Cucolo said the fire, which started in a hallway, was under control within an hour and is being eyed as possible arson.
