Maybe they’ll make better lawyers than cops.
Infamous “Mafia Cops” Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa want to represent themselves in the wrongful-death suits filed against them.
“I can tell you right now that I . . . would love the opportunity to defend myself,” Eppolito wrote to Brooklyn federal Judge David Trager last year.
Eppolito said he can’t afford any more attorneys’ fees, a claim echoed by Caracappa, who wrote a letter thanking the judge for allowing him to represent himself.
Eppolito, 59, and Caracappa, 66, both former NYPD detectives, were convicted in 2006 of being on the payroll of the Luchese crime family in the 1980s and helping to kill eight people. The verdict was overturned on a technicality, pending appeal.
The families of six victims have filed civil suits against the ex-cops and the city, claiming the NYPD should have known the two were corrupt. Stefanie Cohen
