QUINN: LET NYC STEER EDUCATION

Council Speaker Christine Quinn yesterday called for shifting much of the oversight of school policy from state officials to city lawmakers.

“Mayoral control should bring with it municipal authority so that the decisions that affect New York City schoolchildren get made by both sides of City Hall – not in the State Capitol,” she said.

Staffers suggested a bigger role for the council is vital in matters of student health and safety.

Speaking at a Crain’s Business forum in Midtown, Quinn also called for an agency, likely the city’s Independent Budget Office, to oversee the collection and analysis of student-performance data.

It’s an idea that already has been embraced by education-advocacy groups and by at least one top DOE official.
