WEBSTER HALL LANDMARKED

It came down to history versus property value, and history won.

Webster Hall, the famed Greenwich Village nightclub that has hosted Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra, got overwhelming support for landmark status from the City Council Land Use Committee yesterday, despite opposition from the building’s owners.

The 122-year-old building at 125 E. 11th St. will be a historic landmark protected from destruction once the full council approves the designation, which is up for a vote next week.

The owner, Unity Gallega, a nonprofit cultural group for Spanish immigrants, has repeatedly argued the designation would lower the sale or rental price.

Rita Marina Cadio, president of the group, did not attend the committee hearing and did not return calls for comment.

Cadio has said her group does not have immediate plans to sell Webster Hall.
