NO LIMITS FOR MIKE

Mayor Bloomberg is gauging public support for his running for a third term.

Here we go again?

Two months ago, when a mayoral confidante told The Post that Bloomberg was interested in a third term, Hizzoner violently denied it.

Now it’s reported that Mayor Mike is polling the possibility of doing away with term limits – which would at least theoretically open the way for him to seek a third term.

To which we say: Go for it, Mike.

True, that very same poll suggests a referendum lifting limits would face dismal prospects.

And, true, mayoral aides and others have been seeding stories about Bloomberg’s future prospects for months and months now.

President? Vice president? Governor? Purchaser of The New York Times? Mayor (again)?

So New Yorkers can be forgiven a bit of bewilderment on this subject. Is Mike the Pol Who Cried Wolf?

That said, Michael Bloomberg runs a quality mayoralty. New York City could do worse than to have him around for another four years.

And it probably will do worse – thanks (or no thanks) to term limits.

Profoundly undemocratic, term limits embody the elitist notion that New Yorkers are unqualified to choose their leaders all by themselves.

They’ve been in effect since 1997, without improving the quality of city governance in any discernible way.

And now they stand to deny New Yorkers the services of a gifted leader at a most inopportune time.

Yes, voters have twice endorsed term limits at referendum – proving Lincoln’s point that it is indeed possible to fool all of the people some of the time.

So, if the mayor is serious, he needs to quit leaking and start lifting – term limits, that is.

He is a man possessed of intelligence, experience, charm, wit and several billion bucks.

All in all, that could get the job done.
