WOODS OUT FOR YEAR

Tiger Woods made a decision last night to go ahead with season-ending knee surgery.

Woods will have reconstructive surgery on his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), but doctors have told him a full recovery is expected.

He also experienced a small stress fracture in his left leg about two weeks before the US Open and will also need time to recover from that injury.

“I know much was made of my knee through the last week, and it was important to me that I disclose my condition publicly at an appropriate time,” Woods said on his website today.

“I wanted to be very respectful of the USGA and their incredibly hard work, and make sure the focus was on the U.S. Open. Now, it is clear that the right thing to do is listen to my doctors, follow through with their surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee.”

Woods had surgery to clean out cartilage April 15, but later suffered a stress fracture while preparing for his return to golf. That’s what caused his pain during the U.S. Open, which he won in a 19-hole playoff Monday over Rocco Mediate. Woods will miss his first two majors as a professional and the Ryder Cup in September.
