GIANTS’ BRADSHAW IN JAIL

Ahmad Bradshaw, who played a key role in the Giants’ Super Bowl championship run, is serving a 30-day jail sentence on a probation violation in southwest Virginia, his legal counsel said today.

Charles A. Stacy said in a news release that Bradshaw, who was jailed Sunday, is being held on a violation from the Tazewell County (Va.) Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Stacy said the underlying charge stems from an offense that occurred while Bradshaw, a native of Bluefield, Va., was a juvenile.

“Mr. Bradshaw has not been charged with any offense since being drafted by the New York Giants and is eager to put this matter behind him and begin training for next season,” Stacy said in the statement.

His office declined to release any additional information.

The Giants released a statement saying, “We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Ahmad’s legal representative. This situation is not the result of any recent incident. It stems from an issue that occurred prior to Ahmad being drafted by the Giants. Beyond that, we have no further comment.”

Abingdon Regional Jail employee Stephen Clear said Bradshaw reported to the jail under a court order and is being held without bond.

“The only thing we get from the court is that it says it’s on a probation violation,” Clear told the the Bristol (Va.) Herald Courier (tricities.com). “It doesn’t say what the previous charge was.

“The only thing that we can add is … what I can tell you is that he voluntarily came into jail. … He wasn’t brought in by police officers and stuff. Court order said he was to show up at the Abingdon facility and he showed up.”

Bradshaw out of high school initially committed to Virginia, under former Jets coach Al Groh. But an alcohol-related incident during his freshman year resulted in a dismissal from the ACC school.

He landed at Marshall, where burglary charges – related to a videogame-system theft from a dormitory room – resulted in two years’ probation.

Bradshaw was a seventh-round pick of the Giants after being named to the All-Conference USA team twice. He had a crucial fumble recovery in Big Blue’s stunning 17-14 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Bradshaw rushed for 190 yards as an NFL rookie last season, then added 208 yards during the playoffs, including 45 in the Super Bowl.
