GIAMBI MISSES OUT ON FINAL ALL-STAR SPOT

PITTSBURGH – The mustache stays even if Jason Giambi won’t be part of the AL All Star team or compete in the Home Run Derby.

Giambi’s stab at being the final player elected via an on-line voting process that ended today fell short when Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria won the balloting.

“He is a great player, plays hard and deserves it,” said Giambi, who will spend the four-day All Star break home in Las Vegas.

In an effort to boost Giambi’s chances the Yankees built a campaign around the cheesy mustache Giambi started to grow about a month ago. In the end, it didn’t work.

“Everybody gave it a run,” Giambi said. “At the same time I have four days off.”

As for the mustache, it stays.

“I didn’t grow the mustache to make the All Star team,” Giambi said. “(It stays) as long as I keep hitting.”
