DEMS RIDE OLYMPIC COATTAILS

NBC won the first night of the Democratic National Convention – apparently basking the afterglow of the Olympics.

The network, fresh off of broadcasting the most-watched TV event ever, snared almost 4.9 million viewers, according to early Nielsen numbers.

ABC scored a second place 4.2 million and CBS took third place with an average of 3.5 million.

The big three networks covered the first night of the DNC for an hour in primetime starting at 10 p.m.

A speech by Michelle Obama, the wife of the presumed presidential nominee, aired in some markets live at 7 p.m.

Industry observers believe that the Olympics may have a “halo-effect” on NBC’s coverage, as most viewers have been tuning into NBC in primetime for the last two weeks.
