GOLDWATER DIVES INTO POLITICS AT SUBDUED RNC

St. Paul, Minn. — As the Republican party tip toed away from the partisanship that usually defines political convetions, former Rep. Barry M. Goldwater Jr. dove right in.

“The Democrats have a new sense of morality,” Goldwater told a drinking crowd at a reception to hock his book, “Pure Goldwater.”

“They didn’t allow John Edwards to speak at their convention, but in his place, they got Ted Kennedy!” Goldwater said.

The comparison of Sen. Kennedy, who is ailing from incurable brain cancer, to the filandering Edwards, fell flat with the crowd, mostly made up of Texas’ delegates, but Goldwater plunged forward with little notice.

Goldwater, who says he came to the convention to support former presidential fringe candidate Ron Paul, is the son of his namesake, who lost his own bid for president in 1964.
