MRI exam for Hairston

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Prior to yesterday’s first pitch, the Yankees were relieved to be told Jorge Posada doesn’t have a broken bone in his right foot.

Today they hope the news is as good on Jerry Hairston’s left wrist. Hairston will undergo an MRI exam today.

Hairston, a valuable member of the bench because of his versatility and a lock for the postseason roster if healthy, left yesterday’s 3-2 win over the Angels after hearing a pop in his left wrist during a seventh-inning at-bat while taking a warm up swing.

“I felt a pop,” said Hairston, who started at third and batted second. “It’s been bothering me for about three weeks or so. I got a cortisone shot about 10 days ago. I hope it’s scar tissue.”

According to Hairston, the problem in the wrist started before the July 31 trade that brought him from the Reds.

“I dove for a ball and jammed my thumb,” said Hairston, who wore a cloth brace on the left wrist. “Since then it’s been off and on. Today I felt a pop and it scared me. I felt a sharp pain.”

Hairston went 0-for-2 and walked. He was replaced by Ramiro Pena.
