Hairston has tendinitis in wrist

Considering the list of possible alternatives, tendinitis to Jerry Hairston Jr.’s left wrist doesn’t sound like such a bad thing to general manager Brian Cashman.

The Yankees received that diagnosis yesterday, a day after Hairston left a game against the Angels in obvious pain. Hairston yesterday underwent an MRI exam at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and received a cortisone shot.

Cashman called it a relief that Hairston, who will rest for the next several days, will not need extended time off.

“Without a doubt, because [Hairston] said he thought he heard a pop or felt a pop and you think the worst,” Cashman said.

Hairston sustained the injury earlier in the year with the Reds while diving for a ball, and later received a cortisone shot. The latest flare up occurred while he was taking a practice swing in the seventh inning on Wednesday in Anaheim.

David Robertson threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session and reported no problems with his right elbow. Cashman said the right-handed reliever likely will throw another session tomorrow and could be ready for game action next week, against Kansas City and Tampa Bay.

The Yankees’ goal is to have Robertson back in form by Game 1 of the AL Division Series in less than two weeks. Cashman said Robertson will be on the ALDS roster if he doesn’t suffer a physical setback.

“If he’s healthy, he is one of our better guys,” Cashman said.
