Hillary fundraiser pleads not guilty

The lawyer for a wealthy Democratic fundraiser for Hillary Rodham Clinton said his client’s political contributions were legal — despite charges in Manhattan federal court that he defrauded banks out of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Attorney Paul Schechtman made the comment today outside court after his client, Hassan Nemazee, pleaded not guilty to an indictment accusing him of carrying out a $292 million Ponzi scheme.

The feds said Nemazee, 59, cheated three banks out of the money to live an affluent life and pose as an influential fundraiser.

Nemazee was the national finance chairman for Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. He remains under house arrest on $25 million bail.
