Subway finder wins BigApps competition

An application that helps people find the nearest New York City subway and commuter rail stations has won a City Hall competition.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced last year the city was providing dozens of data sets from city agencies and commissions so that the public could come up with new ways to let the public use it. The data included information like property records, restaurant inspections and citywide events.

The competition was called NYC BigApps and the winners were announced Thursday.

The grand prize was one of nine winning applications.

The second prize went to an application that lets users post live comments on city taxis and their drivers.

Cash prizes totaled $20,000.
