The Rumble

Sein him up!

Marv stars in new NBC comedy

The legendary Marv Albert will play himself as an announcer on Jerry Seinfeld’s new NBC comedy show “The Marital Ref.”

“I was flattered by it,” El Marveloso told The Rumble. “Jerry had been after me to do it. It’s kind of a sports motif and it deals with marital disagreements. He said, ‘Why don’t you come to the set and check it out?’ And what really convinced me was the catering.”

The show will air Thursday nights at 10, and its debut, following the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, will feature Seinfeld, Kelly Ripa and Alec Baldwin as celebrity panelists who weigh in on the disputes. Larry David, Tina Fey and Eva Longoria will appear on subsequent shows as celebrity panelists. The host is Tom Papa. The producer is Ellen Rakieten, who was Oprah’s producer for 23 years. “The fact that they’re doing it — how do you get better than that?” Albert said.

It’s amazing that Marv was able to say YES to Seinfeld, considering his schedule: his seventh consecutive Super Bowl broadcast with Boomer Esiason on Westwood One (WFAN in New York); New Orleans at Orlando tomorrow night on TNT; Orlando at Cleveland Thursday night on TNT; the NBA All-Star Game in Dallas next Sunday.

Albert said he likes the Colts, 35-24.

“I just think this is Peyton’s type of game,” he said. “The fact they’ve been there is more of a comfort level.” . . . Tiki Barber’s Super Bowl advice: “I think 70 points are gonna be scored in the game total. Take the Over.”

Full Nelson

Nelson Figueroa had planned to take a rare winter off from pitching winter ball. The Mets’ 35-year old right-hander, who was born in Brooklyn, was home in Chandler, Ariz., watching the Dominican winter ball playoffs in December. He got the itch to play again and wound up joining Escogido, helping the Leones win the league title.

He threw a complete-game three-hitter last Wednesday to help the Dominican Republic turn back Mexico, 7-1 in the Caribbean World Series in Venezuela. The Series, which has teams from the Dominican, Mexico, Venezuela and Puerto Rico, concludes today.

“I am not worried about a tired arm,” said Figueroa, 3-8 in 19 games last season, who is hoping to win a spot when spring training opens Feb. 20 in Port St. Lucie.

“I just love getting on the mound. I will be in great shape when camp opens and I just hope some people will take notice.”

Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, manager Davey Johnson and GM Frank Cashen will be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame before the Aug. 1 game with the Diamondbacks. That game is one of the new Six Pack tickets plans which went on sale this week.

Piazza power

Former Mets slugger Mike Piazza played in the celebrity softball game in the Bahamas that was part of the Michael Jordan weekend golf extravaganza at the Atlantis.

According to sports marketing guru Brandon Steiner, who’s a regular: “the ball still hasn’t landed.” He told Piazza to “ease up, you’re playing with celebrities, not baseball players!”

Former big leaguers were allowed to play, but present players were not allowed to hit, so Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were the managers, and Johnny Damon and C.C. Sabathia joined them for the festivities. “It was just a softball game, but it was very competitive,” Steiner said. “Spike Lee pitched a great game, Wayne Gretzky drove in some runs, but was hobbled with an old hockey injury.”

For all the Beans

Tomorrow’s Beanpot championship game is attracting a lot of attention in these parts because of all of the alumni from Boston University and Boston College — especially those working for the three local NHL clubs.

The Rangers have former BU captains Chris Drury and Matt Gilroy, former BC player Brian Boyle, and assistant coach Mike Sullivan, who played at BC High and then BU. The Devils have Jay Pandolfo from BU and Mike Mottau from BC, and the Islanders feature Rick DiPietro and Freddy Meyer from BU and coach Scott Gordon, who played goalie at BC. Drury (1996) and DiPietro (2000) were tourney MVPs for the Terriers, who have won 29 of the first 57 titles in the annual showdown among BU, BC (14 titles), Harvard (10) and Northeastern (4) the first two Mondays of February.

“It’s such an intense rivalry for bragging rights,” Gilroy told The Post’s Larry Brooks. “It’s a great spectacle. Everyone is into it, the alumni come back, it’s nice to be on center stage. . . . The Beanpot’s one of my best memories from school, but of course one of the reasons might be that we won it three times [laughs].”

In the Devils’ room, Pandolfo boasts to our Mark Everson, “Mottau still stirs the pot, but there’s not much he can say about the old Beanpot. It’s BU’s tournament.”

Mottau concedes past history, but not the future.

“He does have a point. They have a slight edge in winning the Beanpot. But that’s all they have,” Mottau said. “It’s one of the best rivalries in college sports and it’s only heightened in the Beanpot. I never won one. He won two.”

Fans in New York can catch the final on the big screens at Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant on 33rd Street.

Fordham hails Saints

Super Bowl Sunday is always an exhilarating time for those associated with Fordham University. The NFL’s championship trophy, of course, bears the name of the school’s most distinguished alumnus in sports, Vince Lombardi. This year has even more significance. Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi is the grandson of the Fordham “Block of Granite” from the 1930s and Packers Super Bowl I and II championship coach.

“We will be pulling for New Orleans to win the Super Bowl so Joe Lombardi gets the chance to bring home the trophy named for his immortal grandfather and proud Fordham man Vince Lombardi,” said Fr. Joseph McShane, S.J., president of Fordham. “And after all, how can a Jesuit root against a team named the Saints? They will be in our prayers [this] morning.”
