New Whitney ready to build

The Whitney Museum is set to break ground on its new downtown site.

Museum officials recently voted to move ahead with construction on the planned satellite on Gansevoort Street between West Street and the High Line Park in the Meatpacking District.

The six-story building will have 195,000 square feet of space to house part of the famed museum’s collection of 20th and 21st century American art.

Construction is expected to start in May 2011.

The Whitney’s main digs are on Madison Avenue at 75th Street.
