Sneer-io & farewell to Simon

The real “American Idol” is about to take his curtain call.

Simon Cowell, the acid-tongued judge on the popular Fox show, makes his farewell appearance tonight as millions of loyal viewers tune in to see who will become the ninth American Idol.

Since the premiere of “Idol” in 2002, the British record producer’s mean-spirited personality — “utterly dreadful” is among his favorite barbs — has become the show’s biggest draw.

Cowell told “Idol” producers he wouldn’t be back for the show’s 10th season. Instead, he’ll continue as a judge on the American version of his British talent-search show, “The X Factor,” scheduled to air here in September 2011 and also on Fox. That leaves Randy Jackson — assuming he returns — as the only original panelist remaining.

“It’s kind of exciting,” Cowell told fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show yesterday.

“I’m not being ungrateful — I’ve had a fantastic time,” he said. “The show changed my life. But I just kind of knew that it was time to do something different.”

Although Cowell’s reputation has been built on his sneers and jeers for contestants, his final official “Idol” comments last night offered nothing but praise for finalist Crystal Bowersox.

“This is the final critique I’m ever going to [do]. I would just like to say: That was outstanding,” Cowell said.

Now that he’s on his way out, the idea of a Simon-less “American Idol” has some fans a little worried.

“I don’t think there’s any question that Simon leaving will hurt the show,” said Abigail Simmons, who writes an “Idol” blog for BuddyTV.com.

Cowell last night paid his own tribute to “Idol” while delivering his critique of Lee DeWyze, the other finalist.

“This is what this competition was designed for, someone who needs a break,” Cowell said. “I genuinely wish the best for you. You’re a great guy.”

Even before Cowell stunned TV fans with his announcement to leave “Idol,” the show had already been moving in new directions.

“Idol” added a fourth judge in Season 8, bringing in producer and songwriter Kara DioGuardi.

Then, after last season’s finale, loopy fan-favorite judge Paula Abdul packed up her bags. She was replaced by DeGeneres.

Abdul is expected to make a cameo tonight, when either Bowersox or DeWyze is crowned by fans.
