Dogs killed by mystery illness

Four dogs in Ohio have died of a mystery illness — and a New York researcher is on the case.

The pooches may have died from a “circovirus,’’ which causes symptoms including vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy and fluid around the lungs.

The rare but invariably fatal disease was discovered last year by Dr. Amit Kapoor of Columbia University, who was trying to figure out what killed several dogs in New York state.

He said it’s unclear how the disease spreads but noted many of the Ohio victims caught it while they were boarding in kennels. The virus is more common in pigs.
