Mets add candidate to GM list

Sandy Alderson is coming back to Citi Field on Thursday, but he won’t be sizing up the general manager’s office just yet.

The Mets also added a name to the list yesterday, when they received permission from the Blue Jays to interview special assistant to the GM Dana Brown — the first minority candidate the team will talk to in an attempt to replace Omar Minaya.

Alderson, the former Athletics and Padres executive will be the first candidate to return to Citi Field for a second interview when he comes back to meet with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and assistant GM John Ricco.

Sources said Alderson did “very well” when he met with Wilpon and Ricco the first time and expected him to return.

Alderson will not meet yet with team owner Fred Wilpon or president Saul Katz, although both will be more involved as the process — which could take several more weeks — continues.

Brown will arrive at Citi Field tomorrow. The Mets were previously denied permission from the Tigers to talk to another minority candidate, assistant GM Al Avila.

Brown, 43, worked for Minaya in Montreal and it seems unlikely that the Mets would hire a protégé of their fired GM to take his place. Brown also worked as the Nationals’ scouting director.

Brown will join Alderson, White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn, former Arizona GM Josh Byrnes, Boston assistant GM Allard Baird and Dodgers assistant GM Logan White in the first round of interviews.

Like the other candidates, Brown lacks the experience that Alderson brings and it is widely thought Alderson remains the leading candidate.

He was the GM in Oakland for 14 years before leaving to work in the commissioner’s office. He currently is heading MLB’s efforts to overhaul baseball operations in Latin America.

Alderson has been urged by commissioner Bud Selig to pursue the Mets’ job, which is expected to help his chances with Fred Wilpon, who has had a long relationship with the commissioner.
