Dieting and exercise aren’t the only ways to lose weight.

It helps to suddenly find yourself in the US Senate — as New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand proves.

The newly svelte senator, walking in front of the Capitol in a Vogue photo shoot, tells the magazine for its November issue she has lost over 40 pounds since she was appointed to her post by Gov. Paterson.

She did play a lot of tennis and eat a lot less — but also had another trick.

Gillibrand gave away all the clothing she’d worn before her pregnancies with her two sons packed on the pounds.

She recalls telling herself, “I’m going to give away all my clothes because I want to start fresh and I wanted to reward myself; if I ever get back to that size, I can buy new clothes. I gave away every stitch of clothing that I was not wearing.

“I started at size 16, and now I am back at 4/6.”
